Issue #009
Pipeline IQ.
Pull up any pipeline review and you’ll see a big number at the top.
Ask what it will actually close and the room goes quiet.
That gap is the whole problem. A team can pack the pipeline with meetings, log the activity, light up the dashboard, and still have no idea what converts. The number looks like strength. It’s a guess wearing a suit.
Volume is not intelligence. Activity is not predictability. A pipeline you can’t forecast isn’t a pipeline. It’s a pile.
This is where most teams reach for AI. More leads, more sequences, more meetings booked by a bot. None of that tells you what closes. AI doesn’t create pipeline. Systems do. And a system you can’t predict is just faster guessing.
Pipeline IQ is the real measure. Not how much you generate. Whether you can produce qualified opportunities with conversion you can count on. Two axes decide it: opportunity quality on one side, pipeline predictability on the other. Where you land names what’s broken.
Four quadrants fall out of it.
Revenue Theater - high volume, low quality, low predictability. Unqualified meetings, a fake forecast, motion mistaken for progress.
Engineered Volume - clear dashboards and tight process, but weak win rates. Predictable, and still not enough.
Lucky Closers - strong closers with no system underneath. Winning until the one quarter they don’t.
Revenue Infrastructure - quality and predictability together. Predictable conversion, systematic handoffs, a forecast you’d bet payroll on.
Only the last one holds.

The number behind it is sobering. In Salesforce’s State of Sales, 57% of sales professionals say the sales cycle is getting longer. Deals stretch, slip, and stall, and the top-line pipeline figure hides all of it. A bigger pile doesn’t fix a slower close. It just buries the leak deeper.
And the cost lands on the rep. Gartner found overwhelmed sellers are 45% less likely to attain quota. More tools and more volume thrown at the problem don’t raise the IQ of the pipeline. They lower it.
Volume you can generate. Intelligence you have to build.
One move this week.
Take your current pipeline number. The one you’d report to the board. Now ask one question of it: what is the conversion rate from opportunity to won, and how confident are you in it?
If you can’t answer in a sentence, you don’t have a pipeline number. You have a hope.
Walk the four dials.
1 - Conversation to meeting. Your signal versus noise.
2 - Meeting to opportunity. Your qualification discipline.
3 - Win rate. Your effectiveness.
4 - Coverage. Your predictability.
Find the dial you’re guessing on. That’s where the IQ drops. And before you trust the number, pressure-test the whole system: Take the 5-Minute Revenue Diagnostic
When you can name the conversion at every stage, the number stops being a guess and starts being a forecast.
What is your real opportunity-to-won conversion rate, and would you stake the quarter on it?
When you want the math behind your number instead of the hope, the calculator runs it in two minutes:
