Issue #004
Opportunity Signals.
Pull a list of every company that fits your ICP and you get a wall of names. Thousands of them.
From the outside they all look the same. Same size, same industry, same titles.
So most teams treat the list as one thing and start spraying.
Here’s what the list hides. Most of those companies are not in the market. Not skeptical, not slow. Just not buying anything in your category right now.
The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute put a number on it. At any given moment, roughly 5% of B2B buyers are actively in-market. The other 95% are not. The list looks uniform. The intent underneath it is anything but.
Opportunity isn’t spread evenly across a market. It concentrates. It clusters where three things line up.
Pattern - something you can observe.
Problem - what that pattern creates.
Persona - the exact one living that problem.
Pattern plus problem plus persona. That intersection is a signal, and a signal is just evidence that a specific buyer has a problem you already solve.

Start there and your outreach stops feeling random. It feels inevitable, because you reach people at the moment the problem is real for them.
Start with the list instead and the math turns brutal. Gong looked at more than 28 million cold emails. The average rep sends 344 of them to land a single meeting. Spray hard enough and something lands, but you teach a market to ignore you to get there. Salesforce found 73% of B2B buyers now actively avoid sellers who send irrelevant outreach. Volume without signal doesn’t just convert poorly. It burns the field you’ll need next quarter. And it inflates what every customer costs you: Run the CAC Calculator
You don’t need the whole market. You need the lit-up cluster.
One move this week.
Take your next outreach push and don’t start with the list. Start with one signal.
Write down a pattern you can actually see from the outside. A funding round, a new VP, a tech change, a hiring spree, a public complaint. Then name the problem that pattern creates. Then name the one persona who owns that problem and loses sleep over it.
Pattern, problem, persona. Now build the list backward from that. It will be smaller. It will also be lit up, where the old one was dark.
Is your team starting with a list, or starting with a signal?
